Symptoms of Psoriasis.

There are various types of psoriasis and their appearances differ. Most psoriasis cases have cyclic occurrences. The disease can go into complete remission and flare up again due to some triggering factor and stay for a few weeks or months. Severe cases of psoriasis can be painful, disabling and disfiguring.

Psoriatic skin patches can occur on any part of the body but are more commonly seen on the arms, legs, trunk and the scalp. The knees and elbows are the most commonly affected.

The psoriasis symptoms, in general, are explained below.

  • Thickened, dry and raised patches of red and inflamed skin covered with scales.
  • Small spots with scales seen in children.
  • Dry skin which  develops cracks and can bleed.
  • Psoriatic skin patches give rise to itching, burning and soreness.
  • Tiny blood spots are seen when the scales of the skin are picked off or scraped. This is typical and called the Auspitz’s sign.
  • In nail psoriasis, the nails become thickened and pitted and can develop ridges. There can be yellowish discoloration and the nail can even get separated from its bed.
  • In psoriatic arthritis, the joints become swollen, stiff, tender and painful.
