Epicardium.
The epicardium of the heart is made up of connective tissue which is lined by epithelium. The visceral pericardium or the epicardium extends to the roots of the great vessels of the heart.
The visceral layer and the parietal layer of the pericardium join with each other where the aorta and pulmonary artery leave the heart and where the superior and inferior venae cavae and the pulmonary veins empty into the heart. The wave of depolarization during the ventricular contraction moves from inside outwards, that is from the endocardium to the epicardium.
Function of Epicardium.
The epicardium serves to form an outer protective covering of the heart.
