Use of Heart|Function of Heart.

What does heart do. The heart performs an important and vital function of maintaining the circulation of blood in the body. The main function of the heart is to facilitate supply of oxygen and nutrition to every tissue  and body cell in your body through blood supply.

Though this sounds simple, it is probably the most important function to keep a person alive. In short, the function of the heart is to keep you alive and kicking. Stopping of the heart results in certain death.

As explained in anatomy of the heart, chambers of the heart and valves of the heart, a particular sequence of blood flow through the left heart and the right heart is maintained, which enables the heart to perform its function.

Let us evaluate the function and use of each part of the heart, which include the chambers of the heart, the valves of the heart and blood vessels of the heart.

Functions of the Heart|How the Heart Works.

The use of the heart is explained below so that its importance is understood in keeping a person and every part of his/her body alive and functioning. Every part of the heart works in a specific manner to maintain the proper sequence of circulation of blood.

  • The Heart pumps out blood with enough force so that the blood reaches every tissue and cell in the body. These body tissues and cells are alive and functioning. They therefore need oxygen and nutrition in a continuous manner to stay alive and function. The blood pumped by the heart carries nutrition and oxygen to all these body tissues and cells of the body.
  • At the same time just as the body tissues and cells require oxygen and nutrition to function, they also generate impurities and carbon dioxide due to their activity. The blood collects the CO2 and impurities from the body tissues and brings it back to the heart. The heart collects this impure blood and pumps it to the respective parts of the body so that the carbon dioxide and the impurities can be got rid off in the following manner:

>> The heart pumps the impure blood to the lungs so that the carbon dioxide in  the impure blood is got rid off in the lungs and expelled  through the exhaled air.  In exchange oxygen of the inhaled air is taken up by the blood  so that we have  oxygen rich blood for supply again to the body tissues.

>> The other impurities are got rid off through the kidneys and skin to be excreted  through the urine and sweat respectively.

Explained below are the functions of each part of the heart and how they contribute overall to maintain the circulation of blood in the body in the proper fashion.

Function of the Right Atrium.

The right atrium is the upper chamber of the right side of the heart. It receives deoxygenated blood from the body through the superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava veins. The superior vena cava brings blood from the head, neck and the upper extremities (upper part of the body) and the inferior vena cava brings blood from the chest, abdomen and the lower extremities (lower part of body).

Once full, the left atrium contracts and pushes the blood into the left ventricle through the tricuspid valve.
