Heart Anatomy|Heart Structure|Parts of Heart.
The heart is the most important organ of the body and can only be described as a miracle creation, considering that the heart beats (contracts and relaxes) about 72 times per minute continuously, 24×7, for all the years that you live, by generating its own electric impulse. Fascinating heart facts describes some interesting facts about the heart.
The parts of the heart make up the heart anatomy and its structure, which is so designed so as to facilitate its function. Here we have described the anatomy of the human heart and the various parts of the heart. In other words, this post describes what is heart made of.
Heart Shape and Size.
The human heart is a hollow pear shaped or cone shaped organ held upside down with its narrow end below and the broader side above. It is a small organ and is usually the size of one’s closed fist and weighs about 250 grams to 350 grams. This is described in more detail under shape and size of the heart.
It is located in the center of the chest and forms the “epicenter” of the circulatory system. Location of the heart describes in detail where the heart is located.
The heart is a pump requiring no servicing (if you take proper care of it) and no fuel. The normal human heart pumps blood out, at the rate of about 72 beats per second and generates its own electric impulse to keep pumping. The pumping heart action helps to circulate blood throughout the body in order to deliver nutrition and oxygen to even the minutest of the body cells.

Anatomy of the Heart.
The picture above shows the various parts of the heart which make up the anatomy of the human heart.
- Towards the rear of the heart is the vertebral column,
- In front of it is the sternum and the rib cage,
- On either side are the lungs,
- Below, the heart rests on the diaphragm.
Borders of the Heart.
The heart has three borders which are formed as follows:
- Right border of the heart formed by the right atrium.
- Inferior border of the heart formed by the right atrium, the right ventricle and the left ventricle.
- Left border of the heart formed by the left ventricle.
Structure of the Heart|What is Heart made of.
The various structures of the heart make it a complex organ to facilitate its complex function. The heart is made of the heart wall, heart septum, heart chambers, heart valves and its blood vessels.
Wall of the Heart.
The heart is a hollow organ and its wall is composed of three layers.
- Pericardium is the outer layer.
- Myocardium is the middle layer.
- Endocardium is the inner layer.
This is explained in wall of the heart in detail.
Septum of the Heart.
The heart is divided into the left side and the right side by a muscular septum called the inter atrioventricular septum which is made up of connective tissue. The part of the septum that divides the atria is called the interatrial septum and the part that divides the ventricles is called the interventricular septum.
