How to Stop Hair Loss.
1) A well balanced and nutritious diet to stop hair fall.
A nourishing diet is something you should always stick to. As mentioned in Causes of hair loss, deficiency of nutrients like iron, proteins, and minerals do cause hair fall. 2) Medicines and Drugs for Hair Loss:
- Minoxodil for Hair Loss: ( Brand name: Rogaine). 2% topical application is to be gently rubbed into the scalp twice a day. It acts by dilating the blood vessels of the scalp leading to increased blood, nutrition and oxygen supply to the hair follicle. This is one of the hair loss solutions which does generate new hair growth in some people. However its application has to be maintained as stopping of the application stops growth of hair. It is effective only on the frontal and top of the scalp.
- Minoxidil pills for hair Loss: ( Brand name: Loniten) These hair loss pills were previously used for the treatment of hypertension and it was found that more than 70% of users developed hair growth. They are therefore used in lower doses in hair loss conditions. However due to their side effects of increased heart rate and breathing problems in users, topical application is preferred.
- Finasteride for Hair Loss: ( Brand name: Propecia ) is an oral drug for hail loss to be taken on prescription. It is to be used by men and post menopausal women only as it is known to cause congenital deformities in the new borns. It was used in non malignant prostrate hyperplasia and during its use, it was found to increase hair growth. Studies found it to be effective in more than 90 % of the users and if effective, has to be continued indefinitely as stopping it, will stop the hair growth. It acts by inhibiting the DTH hormone, which is known to cause degeneration of hair follicles in hair loss found in genetically prone people. This is used many a times, in conjunction with Rogaine.
- Dutasteride for Hair Loss (Brand name:Avodart) It acts on the same principal as Propecia , but was found to be more effective. It is still under the trials and the FDA of the U.S. has still to approve it in hair loss treatment.
- Retin A for Hair Loss is a topical application for the scalp and is used in conjunction with Minoxidil. It enhances the effect of Minoxidil and also removes the sebum from the scalp which blocks the hair follicles. Sebum contains DTH and thus DTH is not allowed to interact with the hair follicles and destroy them.
3) Hair transplant is a sure shot therapy for hair loss wherein the hair follicles from the back and sides of the scalp are removed and transplanted on the bald area. The loss of existing hair typically grows within a year.
4) Low level laser therapy for curing hair loss . Some studies claim that using laser for hair loss helps to stimulate hair growth by stimulation of the hair follicles using this laser therapy
