Treatment for Alcohol.
Alcoholics never admit that they are alcohol dependent. It, therefore becomes that much more difficult for their loved ones to convince them to undertake treatment for their alcohol addiction. Because if there is alcohol dependency, there is no point in cutting back on alcohol because that will never work. The patient must completely stop drinking alcohol.
Besides the treatment for alcoholism with medication, treatment for alcohol abuse also involves psychotherapeutic support like alcohol education, alcoholism counseling and alcohol group therapy from groups like alcoholic anonymous. Alcohol rehab forms an important part of treating alcoholism and is discussed separately in the subsequent post.
Alcohol Detox.
Benzodiazepines. Alcohol detox involves complete stopping of alcohol and substituting it with medicines with an aim to curb alcohol withdrawal symptoms. These medicines to treat alcohol are benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines are sedatives with action similar to that of alcohol and are given to minimize the alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Individuals with mild withdrawal symptoms can be treated as outpatients and need no admission to an alcohol facility. People who experience severe withdrawal need to get admitted till detox alcohol is complete which may take about a week. Alcohol detoxification forms an important part of treatment for alcoholism.

Alcohol group therapy, alcohol counseling and alcohol education form the three aspects of detoxing alcohol while treating alcoholism.
Alcohol group therapy.
This involves group discussions among individuals who are alcohol dependent. The discussion mainly involves the explanation of the various problems by the individuals due to their alcoholism. They also get motivated by each other when they discuss their strong urge to give up alcohol and regain their original life status back.

Alcoholism counseling.
Alcohol counseling involves explanation to the alcoholic, of the adverse health effects that alcohol has on the body and motivation to stop drinking alcohol. Alcohol counselors are professionally trained and educated in the field of alcoholism and alcohol abuse.

Alcohol Education.
This involves education on the reasons for alcoholism and the need to change the unwanted status in social life, family life, finances and workplace, that has comes with alcoholism.
Treatment for alcohol abuse may take months or even a year. Most cases relapse and therefore it is necessary to stick with it and follow guidelines and seek help when necessary all your life.
Alcohol and Medications.
Medication for alcoholism involves use of drugs that cause side effects if alcohol is taken when the patient is on this drug therapy. Certain other drugs for alcohol are also given to reduce the craving for alcohol and to prevent relapse rate.
- Disulfiram, brand name antabuse is given orally. It is an alcohol sensitizing drug. It is one of the drugs for alcohol treatment which produces side effects if alcohol is consumed when the drug has been taken. It causes certain undesired physical reaction like flushing, nausea, vomiting and headache.
- Naltrexone, brand name Vivitrol decreases the craving for alcohol and is available as injections.
- Acamprosate has shown to lower the relapse rate.
Alcohol Recovery.
Most of the patients do give up alcohol only to have a relapse. Only about 15% to 20% succeed to stay away from alcohol. The urge to drink is strong and stays for a long time. For alcohol recovery, it is necessary to stay motivated and psychologically strong. Keep up with alcohol education, alcohol counseling and alcohol group support all life if necessary. And avoid places where the temptation to drink is strong.
