Back Pain Symptoms.

The most common  back pain is the Lower Back Pain.  This Pain in the Lower back is due the pathological changes in the lumbar and sacral vertebrae. If you have read  Back Bone, you will be in a better position to understand. Symptoms of Lower  Back Pain vary depending on the Causes of Back Pain, and the severity of the progression of the pathology.  Chronic back pain symptoms are more severe because the cause of the back pain is more advanced.

Back Pain Symptoms|Signs of Back Pain.

1) The onset of Back Pain may be sudden or gradual.

Sudden onset of Back Pain is either due to trauma or an acute strain/sprain of the back muscle or a back ligament, due to a excessive stretching  of the back, as a result of an over enthusiastic physical activity. Gradual onset is a result of a gradually progressing pathology in the back bones, or the back muscles, or the back ligaments.

2) The duration of Pain in the Back.

Back pain may last for a few days or a few weeks or it may be chronic. Chronic Back Pain is the pain  of more than three months duration. Pain in lower back of a few days or few weeks is usually due to back muscle pain due to back  muscle strain.  Chronic Back Pain is due to a pathological causes. Refer “Back Pain – Causes”.

3) The Pain in the lower Back may radiate to the lower extremities.

This is symptom of chronic back pain. This is due to the pressure exerted on the sciatic nerve by a prolapsed inter vertebral disc ( explained in back bone). This is called Sciatica.

4) Back Pain may be associated with tingling, numbness and weakness in the lower extremities.

5) Lower Back Pain may limit the movements of the lower extremities and the back.

6) Back pain on sneezing and coughing.

The Back Pain may worsen on sneezing or coughing. This is due to the tightening of the back musclesn during sneezing. Normal muscles do not pain during sneezing, but the strained, over stretched muscles do.

7) In a little advanced chronic back pain cases, there may be difficulty in passing urine or stools. This happens when the spinal cord has been compressed by a prolapsed inter vertebral disc or a collapsed vertebra.
