Diabetes and Impotence.
Erectile Dysfunction or ED and Diabetes or Impotence and Diabetes often co exist. Diabetes is one disease, which can have adverse effects on various systems of your body. A number of complications can develop as a result of Diabetes and you could read them at Complications of Diabetes. However, please note that these complication arise due to improper control of diabetes. 80% of Diabetics suffer from Erectile incompetence or Male Impotencey, while 20% of the non diabetic males suffer from Erectile Dysfunction. A disciplined diabetic need not worry about these complications, though he must know them so as to stay disciplined.
Impotency or Erectile Dysfunction, as it is also called, is one of the complication of Diabetes. Uncontrolled diabetes often results in clogging of the arteries and damage to the nerves, called atherosclerosis and neuropathy respectively.
How Does an Erection occur:
1) Transmission of an impulse from the brain (because of a stimulating thought or a stimulating sight) to the penis via the spinal cord, the nerves in the pelvis which come out from the spinal cord, and the nerves supplying the penis.
2) When this impulse reaches the penis, the corposa cavernosa in the pelvis relaxes, as a result of which blood flows into it through the arteries supplying the penis. As a result of getting filled with blood and due to the pressure of this blood, the penis becomes erect.
In diabetes, due to atherosclerosis there is clogging of the arteries, and due to diabetic neuropathy the nerves are damaged.
As a result of damaged nerves, impulse from the brain does not reach the penile area, and due to atherosclerosis, there is insufficient blood flow to the penis. There is impairment of erection. This Erectile Dysfunction may be total or partial, depending on extent of damage to the nerves and blood vessels. This damage will again depend on the duration of the uncontrolled diabetes.
These are the reasons why Diabetes and Impotence or Diabetes and Erectile Dysfunction may coexist.
How does a Diabetic Prevent Erectile Dysfunction:
Unfortunately, any damage to a nerve is irreversible. Therefore staying disciplined and taking proper measures to control your diabetes is important. Controlling blood sugar with diet and treatment and taking the right measures as explained in Treatment and Management of Diabetes, will prevent further deterioration of the condition. Therefore, to prevent erectile dysfunction or impotence, a diabetic must ensure that he follows the do’s and the don’ts, which are necessary to control blood sugar and keep it within normal limits.
