Back Pain Due to Pregnancy.
Back pain is a common symptom of pregnancy seen in the second trimester. It is seen in 50% of pregnant women. It is due to a variety of factors.
Why this occurs.
- Firstly, as your abdomen swells, the center of gravity shifts and you walk in a different way (by leaning back to avoid falling) which strains your back.
- Secondly the muscles of the abdomen and back relax due to the hormone relaxin which is produced in 10 times its normal concentration during pregnancy to cause relaxation of the pelvic joints to allow for passage of the baby during labor. This produces an additional strain on your back and abdominal muscles.
- Thirdly you gain weight which puts an additional strain on your back.
- Fourthly mental stress due to anxiety of pregnancy can cause your back muscles to tense up giving you back pain.
- Lack of sleep during pregnancy can also contribute to back pain as some sleeping posture can cause the weight of the womb to stretch your back muscles.
What to do. Using the right posture, sleeping right (on your side), moderate exercise to strengthen the back muscles, alternate warm and cold compresses and light massage will help reduce this symptom.
Vaginal Discharge During Pregnancy.
One of the first signs of pregnancy you may notice is increased vaginal discharge which spoils your underwear. This is due to increased cervical secretions caused by increasing hormone secretion brought about due to conception. This discharge which may be white or golden is perfectly normal. Reddish discoloration could mean spotting.

Headaches Due to Pregnancy.
Frequent mild headaches during pregnancy are reported by many women during pregnancy. These are due to rapidly changing hormonal status and dilation of blood vessels.
Dizziness.
Early in pregnancy faintness may be experienced due to drop in blood sugar levels. Again due to dilation of blood vessels during pregnancy, there is drop in blood pressure which can make you to feel light-headed and dizzy.
Higher Body Temperature.
Your body temperature does rise higher than normal during pregnancy and you may feel warm. Secondly, if you have been charting your body temperature to check if you are pregnant, you will find that it does rise slightly after ovulation till your next period which will be 14 days after ovulation date. A continued higher temperature beyond the two weeks could mean you are pregnant.
Weight Gain Due To Pregnancy.
Gaining weight as pregnancy advances due to the growing fetus is another sign of pregnancy. A weight gain of 25 to 35 pounds is considered healthy for a pregnant woman who was of average weight. This weight gain is due to the growing fetus inside you which accounts for just one-third of the weight gained while the rest of the weight gain is due to increase in your body mass.
