Types of Psoriasis Arthritis.

There are five types of psoriasis arthritis. Knowing the type of psoriatic arthritis is important in lieu of finalizing the line of treatment. As mentioned in psoriatic arthritis, 30% of the people with psoriasis develop arthritis psoriasis, which is characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints. The joints affected, depends on the type of psoriatic arthritis.

Types of Psoriatic Arthritis.

1)      Asymmetric Psoriatic Arthritis.

This is a mild form and occurs in 70% of the patients. As the name suggests, it is asymmetrical  and does not affect the same joints on both sides of the body. Fewer than three joints on one side of the body are involved. It can affect any joint of the body such as the hip, knee, ankle or wrist. Sausage shaped swollen fingers and toes are seen in this type. You could have one large joint (eg the knee)  along with a few small joints of the fingers or toes.

2)      Symmetric Psoriatic Arthritis.

This occurs in 15% of the cases and affects the same joints on both sides of the body. It resembles rheumatoid arthritis and can cause disability in 50% of the cases. It can occur in small as well as large joints.

3)      Arthritis Mutilans.

This is the most severe form which affects less than 5% of the cases of psoriatic arthritis. As this progresses over a period of years, it causes severe joint damage, which leads to deformity and destruction of the joint. This can occur in cases of rheumatoid arthritis as well and is also referred to as chronic absorptive arthritis. It affects the small joints of the hands and feet, but can also be seen in joints of the spine.

4)      Spondylitis.

This is seen in 5% of the cases and affects usually the joints of the vertebral column or the spine causing lower back pain and stiffness. However, it can also affect joints of the hips, the hands and the feet similar to symmetric psoriatic arthritis.

5)      Distal Interpharyngeal Predomination.

This is found in about 5% of the psoriatic arthritis cases and is seen in the distal small joints of the fingers and toes. There is stiffness and swelling and pain of these joints along with marked nail changes.
