Breast cancer symptoms vary and many breast cancers do not present any symptoms till the late stages.  Breast cancer can present as a lump or swelling of the breast or just some skin changes. Being sure of the presence of breast cancer is important before exposing  the patient to cancer treatment. 

Differential Diagnosis of Breast Cancer.

There are other conditions of the breast which can be mistaken for breast cancer.These conditions are all benign and mentioned in descending order of frequency:

  • A fibrocystic disease of the breast called mammary dysplasia which is characterized by benign or non malignant breast lumps.
  • Fibroadenoma which is a non malignant lump in the breast made of fibrous and glandular tissue.
  • Intraductal papilloma is a non cancerous tumor that grows inside the milk ducts..
  • Lipoma is a non malignant growth made of fat or adipose tissue. It is soft and encapsulated.
  • Fat necrosis is a rare non malignant inflammatory lesion in the breast. It may present as a lump with skin changes and usually is a result of trauma due to surgical procedures such as a biopsy or lumpectomy.

Test for Breast Cancer.

Breast Cancer Diagnosis is confirmed by a series of tests and procedures which comprise breast screening.

1) Breast Exam.

2) Mammogram.

3) Breast Ultrasound.

4) Breast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging).

5) Breast Biopsy.

6) Blood Tests for Breast Cancer.
